Ex-Google staff launch rival search engine, Cuil

The new site promises better results by scouring a larger index of web pages than Google, but experts are cautious about its prospects
A group of former Google employees is hoping to outmanouvre their old boss by developing a rival search engine they claim provides a more comprehensive guide to the web.
Cuil, which went live today, was built by Anna Patterson, a former Google employee who helped create the company's index - the enormous catalogue of web pages which its scours every time someone conducts a query.
Speaking before the launch of Cuil, which is pronounced 'cool', Ms Patterson said that one of the main reasons rival search engines such as Microsoft Windows Live and Yahoo! had struggled was because they weren't able to index as many pages as Google.
Cuil had solved that problem by compiling an index three times as large as Google's - searching for results across 120 billion web pages compared with Google's index of 40 billion pages, she said. Google does not reveal how large its index is, but in a statement today said that it welcomed competition, which "stimulates innovation and provides users with more choice."
Rather than displaying results in a list, like Google, Cuil shows them on a page which has a more magazine-like feel. Each result has a greater amount of text alongside it, and sometimes an image as well. "You can't be an alternative search engine and smaller," Mr Patterson was quoted as saying. "You have to be alternative and bigger."
Cuil, which is based in Menlo Park, near San Francisco, has raised $33 million from venture capital investors.
s well as Ms Patterson, its founding team includes her husband, Tom Costello, who developed search technology for the computing giant IBM, and two other former Google engineers - Russell Power, who worked on the same team as Ms Patterson, and Louis Monier, who was also the chief technology officer at Alta Vista, one of the most popular pre-Google search engines.

First preview of Google's Android phone

You can see the much awaited google’s Android smart phone OS demostration by Google’s Enginner.

Owners of the new Google-powered mobile phone will be able to unlock the handset by drawing a secret shape on the screen.
The new 'signature unlocking' tool was among the features revealed during a sneak preview in California yesterday.
Other highlights include a built-in compass that will allow people to orientate maps as they use their phone to scout out a restaurant or venue, and a customisable homepage that lets people bookmark their favourite web pages.
The device - which is unlocked by drawing a shape only the owner knows on a nine-square grid - will also include a magnifying tool, to make zooming in on web content easier on a small screen, and a mobile version of the game Pac Man.
Google will not make the phone, but has helped develop the software that handset manufacturers will install in their devices. Samsung, HTC, LG Electronics, and Motorola are among the companies that have said they will produce phones that run on Android.
The device on which Mr Rubin gave the demonstration (see the above YouTube video) had a touch-sensitive screen, but the software will work equally well on other devices, he said, including those with a so-called 'tracking ball', which has been used by BlackBerry.
Android is what is known as an 'open-source' operating system, meaning that developers can access the code and create software that works with the device. Apple has announced a similar inititiave which allows developers to create software for the iPhone.

Google’s Phone ‘Android’ Coming Next Week

A prototype of the Google Android mobile by Qualcomm is on display at the Mobile World Congress (formerly 3GSM World Congress) in Barcelona, February 11, 2008 can be seen below.

The phone, which features a slide-out keypad, is being manufactured by Taiwan's HTC Corp and will be sold by Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile USA unit, which plans to unveil the device at an event in New York on September 23.

T-Mobile has confirmed that September 23 is D-Day for announcing the massively hyped phone which is expected to inject some vigour into the smartphone market and give tough competition to the Apple’s iPhone.

AT&T Inc, the only U.S. operator selling Apple Inc's iPhone, set the price of the latest version at $199 in July, setting a benchmark for smartphones that can surf the Web, manage email and other multimedia features. Based on the price tag of iPhone Google’s much awaited Android OS phone will hit the market with same price tag as per the first hand information leaked
